  The reason Bessie was in St. Louis, was that her foster parents wanted to go to the St. Louis World's Fair. It was supposed to be in 1903, but it was delayed to 1904. The family visited and ended up moving there. She had two jobs there. One was with a tobacco packing company and the other was a garment factory. Her foster parents were George and Vesta Jane Schwitzer. They had a son, Russell, while in St. Louis, but he died young. George moved back to Ohio, but Vesta stayed in St. Louis, with Bessie. She was always giving, but had little to give. She had a good mind. She was subdued with Robert's dominance, but she had loyality to the family and endured. She could draw very well. Bessie, her husband Robert along with their first son, Elton moved to Montana from St. Louis some time between 1917 and 1919. They homesteaded on 320 acres of good land. There was water running through the land off of Pryor Mountain, but the water rights were owned by rancher Bert Bent. Bent allowed Robert only enough water to water the garden, but not enough to farm. Robert worked for Bent. One job was to tear down a rail road bridge after the rail road was abandoned. The reason was to salvage the timber which was scarce on the praire. After the job was done, Robert found out that the bridge was actually located on the local Indian reservation and he was not supposed to be on their land. After a while, Bent went broke and the bank foreclosed on the property. Bent and his son just got on their horses and rode off. Robert then didn't have a job and was forced to return to St. Louis. Bert killed a beef to eat and hung it up. His wife kept asking him to cut up the meat, but after a while she just took to cutting off a piece at a time. When Robert saw the carcass it was half gone and thought it was funny to see. One story about Robert was that he referred to himself as a green horn. When Robert and Bent were out riding one time, Bent got off his horse and layed down on the ground. Robert thought this was strange until Bent told him to get off his horse and get on the ground so they could talk. The green horn didn't know that you had to get on the ground to hear when the wind was blowing as hard as it often did in Montana. During their time in Montana, Louis and Vernon were born. They lived in a dug-out log house. They were in the homestead for about three to four years. When we (James) visited the farm where Robert and Bessie lived in the 50's and 60's, I remember seeing Bessie's school books. Her primers were given to Linsey Romine (Bessie's great grand daughter). The farm and house were very humble, but she always offered us a Vanilla Wafer as a snack. Recorded in a conversation between Clarence and James Romine on Feb 21, 2009.
